Apple company release "Wearable Ipod" on friday

Apple Computer Corp. said Tuesday it will have the new iPod shuffle digital music player in stores Nov. 3. When the new compact design was announced in mid-September, Apple said it would make the device available in October.

About half the size of the original shuffle, the new half-cubic inch iPod contains 1 GB of flash memory that holds up to 240 songs. It weighs half an ounce and features an aluminum design with built-in clip, making small enough to wear.

The shuffle offers up to 12 hours of battery life and is based on Apple's shuffle feature that lets music fans serve up a continuous mix of their favorite songs anywhere they go. The iPod lets users enjoy songs randomly, or flip a switch to listen to songs in order.
Connect the iPod shuffle to a Mac or a PC with the included dock, and the iTunes AutoFill feature syncs songs from their music library.

The new wearable shuffle is priced at $79.

Google Launches Unofficial Experimental Search Engine

Google has launched an unbranded, experimental site to test search features that could one day show up in its current online search engine.

The SearchMash homepage gives no indication that its from Google. To see the connection, one has to go the privacy page. Finally, the search engine lists the first 10 results, but users can click a "more results" bar at the bottom to load the next 10 items and scroll down to view them. Users can add as many sets of items as they want.

SearchMash's current features do not appear to break new ground in the industry. Search engine A9.com, which is owned by online retailer Amazon.com, automatically adds the next 10 results as a person scrolls down the listings. Windows Live Search from Microsoft includes several unique features, including the ability to create a customized search engine focused on specific Web sites. Yahoo also offers the ability to build your own search engine.

Google often runs tests on the Web that are visible to a relatively few people. In April, the company explained in its blog that it sometimes randomly selects a group of people to see an experimental test option or a new element while they're searching. As a result, a person using Google will sometimes see a slightly different site, than others.

Microsoft Ships Windows Media Player 11 Beta 2

Microsoft Corp. has released beta 2 of Windows Media Player 11, adding the ability to stream music, pictures and video to devices attached to a home network.

The media-sharing feature follows Microsoft's strategy of offering Windows as an entertainment hub for the home. Media Player 11 will be embedded in Windows Vista, which is set for release to consumers in January.

In describing the latest version of Media Player, Microsoft points out that it can stream content to Xbox 360, which Microsoft is also building into an entertainment center. Along with the gaming console, Media Player can shoot content to any supporting digital media receiver, such as the Roku SoundBridge or the D-Link MediaLounge, whether it's on a wired or wireless network. If the latter uses Wi-Fi technology, however, it's unlikely to have the bandwidth for video.

Global mobile operators and device makers are betting that the next level of transmission technology will ramp up mobile phone usage in a way that third-generation technology has so far failed to do.

So-called fourth-generation (4G) mobile technology, now being developed, would allow two-way communication in voice, video and data on a scale that was previously impossible, companies said at a Samsung 4G Forum mobile conference.

4G would allow mobile users on the go to enjoy services that they can now get through personal computers with high-speed broadband connections.

Firefox 2.0 Delayed Until October

Mozilla Corp. on Monday pushed back the release date of Firefox 2.0 ye again, with a scheduled ship for mid-to-late October.

There are approximately 40 bugs in the under-construction Firefox 2.0 Beta 2, and about 100 that need to be addressed before the final version goes out the door, Mozilla says.

The current 1.5.0.6 version of Firefox can be downloaded for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X from here.

Sony Introduces Pocket-Sized Windows XP Device

Sony Tuesday officially announced its long-rumored pocket-sized, Windows XP Pro-based PC. The one-pound device, the VAIO UX Micro PC, has a 4.5-inch display capable of 800 x 600 resolution and an Intel Core Solo Ultra Low Voltage microprocessor, the company said. It also has an integrated hardware keyboard suitable for thumb-typing as well as touch-screen capabilities for accessing frequently used applications.

"This model is an achievement in ingenious design," Mike Abary, Sony's vice president of VAIO product marketing, said in a statement. "With this pocket PC, you can have the same functionality as your office or home PC in a device that fits in the palm of your hand."

The Sony device has built-in support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Cingular's EDGE cellular data network. The device also comes with two cameras, one for video conferencing and the other for taking digital photos. In addition, it comes with a fingerprint sensor for security, the company said. It also comes with a USB docking station for connecting a full-sized keyboard, display, and speakers. While it superficially looks like so-called ultra-mobile PC devices such as Samsung's Q1, which recently started shipping, those devices don't have built-in hardware keyboards. The VAIO UX Micro PC will cost about $1800 when it is available in July, Sony said.

Microsoft declared Visual Studio 2005 Express "forever free" last week, extending the no-cost deal it initially said would end a year after the software's November 2005 release. Visual Studio 2005 Express joins SQL Server Express in Microsoft's portfolio of entry-level freebies. Intended for hobbyists and students, the Express editions have limited functionally and streamlined user interfaces. However, their licenses do allow commercial deployment.

Microsoft Monday night released a second beta version of its upcoming Internet Explorer 7 Web browser, designed for tabbed browsing and better security. Whereas Microsoft aimed previous test versions of the software at Web developers and designers, the new beta is the first that targets consumers, and the company will offer free, 'round-the-clock technical support by phone for the browser.

The new beta version of IE 7 will run on PCs with the Windows XP operating system, and contains all of the features Microsoft plans for the final release of the software later this year. Version 7 includes the ability to browse the Web using tabs, new technology for printing Web pages more faithfully, support for RSS feeds, and a new warning system that can flag dangerous Web sites to users. PC users can download the new version of IE 7 for Windows XP from Microsoft's IE Web site .

Opera Released its new version 9.0 (Beta)

Norwegian browser maker Opera Software on Thursday unveiled the first public beta of its namesake, Opera 9.0. The 3.7MB beta, which can be downloaded from the Oslo-based company's Web site, follows a rougher technical preview that debuted in October 2005.

Among Opera 9.0's new features are "widgets," small Web-based applications similar in function to the same-named applets in Mac OS X and to Yahoo's Widget Engine. Windows Vista, Microsoft's next-generation operating system, will also include widget-like capabilities.

Microsoft Updates Anti-Spyware Defender

Microsoft on Thursday unveiled a minor refresh of its anti-spyware Microsoft Defender software with improvements to the user interface and signature updating. Other changes include a tweak that modifies alerts according to the severity of a threat to make them less, improvements in the real-time protection to better watch key parts of the OS for potential infection, and support for 64-bit systems.

Still officially in beta, Windows Defender Beta 2 is an add-on to Windows XP, 2000, and Server 2003, but will be integrated into Windows Vista when it releases to consumers in January 2007 and businesses in November of this year.

"We have added a checkbox option to continually display the system tray icon," wrote a member of Microsoft's Anti-Malware Engineering Team on the group's blog. "We have also improved Windows Defender's ability to report more accurate data about potentially unwanted software through SpyNet so that we can help create better definition updates."

SpyNet is an option for Defender users, who can use it to report suspicious software to the Redmond, Wash. developer. "With these upcoming changes to our reporting network and our core technology, we will improve our detection and removal capabilities even more in the upcoming months," the Defender team promised.

Microsoft's Office Live service will likely include a Web-based e-mail client dubbed "Office Live Mail," a Web site run by several Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals said Thursday.
Office Live, one of the major pieces in Microsoft's new strategy to push into the software-as-service market in an effort to derail competitors such as Google, Yahoo, and Salesforce.com, is targeted at small businesses with 10 or fewer employees. When it releases -- details are still sketchy, since it's not yet entered full beta test -- it will offer free domain registration and Web site hosting, free online collaboration tools a la Groove Networks, and free access to multiple mail accounts.

According to the LiveSide site, Office Live will let users choose between free and paid mail accounts -- the former with 250MB of storage, the latter with 2GB, identical to Hotmail allowances -- allow users to access Outlook via HTTP, and save e-mail messages to the local machine.

"Office Live Mail provides users with the ability to read and receive emails from any internet-connected computer in the world," LiveSide quoted an e-mail reportedly from Microsoft. "Ideal for those on the move, Office Live Mail can be accessed from either a web browser or Outlook 2000/2003."

In a separate e-mail that was sent Jan. 6 to the 70,000-plus users who have signed up for the Office Live beta, Microsoft noted that the service will require Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, Microsoft Office 2000 or newer, and Windows XP or later.
Microsoft has not committed to a debut date for the beta, and has only said it would launch the service preview early this year. The e-mailing to beta testers, however, fueled speculation that the service will be unveiled shortly.

The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service, based at the Paris Observatory, tells the world every six months whether to add or subtract a second from atomic clocks, the standard for everyday timekeeping.

A leap second is added to Co-ordinated Universal Time (UTC) to keep it in step with solar time - based on the Earth's rotation on itself - to within a second.

Tidal friction causes the Earth's rotation to slow down, which means that solar time tends to drift out of sync with atomic clocks.

If this disparity was not corrected, the "error" could increase to several seconds within a few decades; and, claim astronomers, eventually make some of their software and possibly hardware obsolete. The first leap second was added on 30 June, 1972

Oh, and don't forget Windows Vista, Microsoft's next-generation operating system. They're all places that the financially-motivated new generation of hackers might look to exploit.

Although there haven't been any widespread attacks, cell phones and mobile devices will become more ripe for hacking as software becomes interoperable and financial data climbs onto their hard drives and networks.

The new iPod features a 2.5-inch color screen. It's thinner and has more storage than the previous iPod version, but the price is unchanged--$299 for the 30-Gbyte model and $399 for the 60-Gbyte one, which Apple estimates will hold 15,000 songs, 25,000 photos, or more than 150 hours of video.

Apple partnered with Disney to offer downloads of ABC shows such as Desperate Housewives and Lost. In addition to some 2,000 music videos, iTunes users can buy Pixar short films. And though there aren't many video blogs now, that's likely to change if video iPods become popular.

Audio podcasting took off thanks to both iPod and iTunes, and video podcasting should follow a similar trajectory. Expect to see a lot more of it, from the usual suspects and emerging talent.

Google Earth Spots Remains Buried In Rome

An Italian man using Google Earth spotted the signs of a buried Roman villa near his home, the science journal Nature reported Wednesday.

Luca Mori, 47, from Sorbelo, noticed unusual shadings in the satellite photographs used by Google Earth when he was viewing the area around his own home. "At first I thought it was a stain on the photograph but when I zoomed in I saw that there was something under the earth," Mori told Nature.
Archaeologists who Mori contacted surmised that the rectangular shape showing near an ancient river bed was of human origin. Officials from the National Archaeological Museum of Parma then visited the site, which is now farmland, and after finding traces of ceramic and stone, confirmed that it's a villa from the reign of Caesar Augustus.

Google Earth is a free-of-charge stand-alone program which combines local search with satellite images.

Worm Redirects Google Searches To Look-Alike Site

A new worm modifies the infected PC so attempts to search using Google are directed to a spoofed site that looks like the real thing, but with different sponsored links to drive traffic to sites the hacker's designated, a security firm said Friday.

Panda Software's analysis of the P2Load.a worm showed that after compromising a PC, it modifies the Windows HOSTS file so all attempts to reach google.com -- and even mistyped addresses, such as "googel.com" -- are redirected to a site actually served from Germany. "The page is an exact copy of Google and supports the 17 languages of Google," said Panda in a statement.

Searches run on the spoofed version of Google return results similar to the real Google, but in some cases, the sponsored links -- top-of-the-page and right-side links to e-commerce sites that have paid for the placement -- are different.

"The creator of this worm has taken advantage of the importance of a company appearing among the first few links in the search results of an Internet browser,” said Luis Corrons, director of PandaLabs, in a statement. “Its aims are none other than to increase visits to the pages linked by the creator of this malware or earn an income from companies that want to appear in the first few results in computer where the identity of Google has been spoofed…in both case, the motivation of the author of this malware is purely financial."

Because the new HOSTS file is downloaded from a Web site, not embedded in the worm's code as is the usual practice, Panda warned that P2Load.a, or similar threats, could spoof other popular sites by simply changing the content of the file downloaded.

Google has been targeted by hackers before. In March, for instance, a widespread DNS cache poisoning attack redirected traffic from Google and other popular URLs to hacker sites. In another case, phishers and spyware creators downloaded software, including bank account theft software, to PCs when their owners mistyped google.com and ended up at a malicious site hosted by servers in Russia.

Google Won't Remove "Failure" Link To Bush

Google says it won't manually manipulate its search results, even when pranksters push unwarranted links to the top of the results list with so-called "googlebombing" tactics.

The most recent embarrassment for Google? Type "failure" into the Google search field. The number one result: President George W. Bush's official bio hosted by the White House Web site. "We've received some complaints recently from users who assume that this reflects a political bias on our part," wrote Marissa Mayer, Google's director of consumer products on the company's blog. "In this case, a number of webmasters use the phrases [failure] and [miserable failure] to describe and link to President Bush's website, thus pushing it to the top of searches for those phrases. We don't condone the practice of googlebombing, or any other action that seeks to affect the integrity of our search results, but we're also reluctant to alter our results by hand in order to prevent such items from showing up."

Actually, googlebombing Bush is nothing new. In late 2003, for instance, 30 or so sites with the phrase "miserable failure" linked to the same bio page; earlier that year, another googlebomb led searches for the phrase "weapons of mass destruction" to a joke page that read "The weapons you are looking for are currently unavailable. The country might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your weapons inspector mandate."

"Pranks like this may be distracting to some, but they don't affect the overall quality of our search service," said Google's Mayer. Google's not the only search service to be hit. Searches on Yahoo and Ask Jeeves using the words "miserable failure" return the same Bush bio in the first spot, while "failure" typed into MSN's search puts the bio as the number two result.

Microsoft Updates Free Malware-Cleaning Tool

Microsoft offered on Tuesday was another edition of Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, its for-free utility that seeks and destroys selected worms, viruses, and Trojans.

The revamped program now cleans PCs of one additional bot -- Esbot -- and three more worms: Bobax, Gael, and Yaha. In mid-August, and out-of-cycle from its normal second-Tuesday-of-each-month update, the tool took into account the Zotob bot worm, which had hit Windows 2000 systems earlier that month.

Microsoft's removal tool can be downloaded or run from its Web site; users who have Windows' Automatic Updates feature enabled receive the updated utility automatically.

Google Offers GMail App For The Mac

Google Inc. has released in beta a Mac application that connects the desktop directly to the search engine's Web mail service.

The Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X alerts users when they have new and unread email through an icon on the computer's system tray. The icon also shows the subject of the email, the sender and a snippet from the body. The information is available without opening a browser.

Google, Mountain View, Calif., has been aggressive in releasing software that connects the desktop directly to the Web and its services, bypassing the need to launch rival Microsoft Inc.'s Internet Explorer or other Web browser. Other desktop applications include Google Earth, a search application that displays satellite-based views of places and lets people overlay road maps on top of the geography.

Other Gmail Notifier features include viewing messages without a browser and opening Gmail in a browser without logging in. Users of Google Talk for the Mac, the company's instant messaging client, don't need to install Notifier, since the IM application automatically delivers new mail notifications.

Greg Miller, the Google software engineer who built Notifier, said in the company's blog this week that the application was the company's first, but not the last, for the Mac.

Google Inc. said today it plans to release a beta version of Google Desktop 2, the next iteration of its popular desktop search software for Microsoft Windows.

Google Desktop 2 boasts expanded search capabilities, such as the ability to search network drives and Gmail accounts. It also returns search results from local files as soon as you start typing. Along similar lines, the beta includes an Outlook Search Toolbar, for those who want to search their E-mail without changing applications.

Google Desktop is available in English for Windows XP and Windows 2000 SP3 and up.

Firefox's Market Share Slips; IE Rises

Firefox's share of the web browser market slipped a bit in July, while Internet Explorer gained by an equal amount, a website analysis firm said Friday.

Market share for the Mozilla Foundation's open-source browser dipped to 8.07 percent in July from a high of 8.71 percent in June, according to NetApplications, which gathered the data from the 40,000 websites it monitors.

Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer, on the other hand, increased its market share to 87.2 percent from 86.56 percent, the Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based, company, said. The Mac browser Safari showed modest growth to 2.13 percent, while most other browsers experienced little change

Microsoft Releases File Sync Tool For XP

Microsoft has released a beta version of a new folder and file synchronization tool it says is easier to use and more reliable than the often-ignored Briefcase that's included with Windows XP.

Dubbed SyncToy, the new tool relies on a simple wizard-style interface to walk users through the copying process. It will copy files from one folder to another, keep both folders in sync, and automatically delete files in one folder when they've been erased in another.

Microsoft's especially touting what it called "intelligent renaming," a process whereby SyncToy detects renamed -- but otherwise unchanged -- files in one folder, say on a laptop, and then automatically renames those same files in another folder, say one on a desktop PC.

Because it's part of the Windows Toy output, SyncToy is not officially supported by Microsoft through normal technical support channels, but there is a user-to-user forum available at the Professional Photography site.

SyncToy works only in Windows XP. It can be downloaded from Microsoft's Download Center (Windows Genuine Advantage validation is required) free of charge.

Microsoft Corp. on Friday unveiled "Windows Vista" as the official name of the next version of its popular operating system, setting aside its long practice of using release years or acronyms to describe its flagship product.

The company first disclosed the name Thursday at the company's Microsoft Global Briefing, an employee-only conference being held in Atlanta, but only made the name public on Friday in a webcast. Until then, it was known by the codename of "Longhorn."

At the event, Microsoft showed a short video strutting the Vista name, along with the tag phrases "Clear Confident Connected" and "Bringing clarity to your world." The "clear" reference has a play in Windows Vista, since one of its features is to be transparent window frames.

Microsoft has said it will release the new operating system before the end of next year. The first beta will ship by August 3, less than two weeks from now, Microsoft said on its new Vista Web site. An online search of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office database turned up no Microsoft listing for the name, but a WHOIS search revealed that Microsoft has registered such domains as windowsvista.us and microsoftvista.com.

NEC Corp. said today it has developed a mobile router that enables broadband access from fast-moving vehicles on the ground. NEC's router prototype, called LiteBird, looks just the way it sounds--it's small in size and can be installed in vehicles, or any mobile objects for that matter. It uses proprietary Internet Protocol handover technology, which offers stable wireless communication of more than 6 Mbps for vehicles traveling at up to 125 mph.

LiteBird works on wireless LANs and 3G, third-generation cellular networks, which means laptop and mobile-device users can get ubiquitous wireless coverage even at high speeds, says NEC. 3G is designed for transfer of high-speed multimedia data with speeds ranging from 128 Kbps to several megabits per second.

NEC has some altruistic ideas for the technology, such as safe-operation support systems in trains, and real-time transmission of voice and images between data centers and emergency-response vehicles. But it could also be used to distribute information and provide Internet access to passengers on trains and buses. NEC does intend to pitch the technology for surfing while driving.

NEC plans to exhibit the technology at the Wireless Japan 2005 show, being held from July 13 to 15 in Tokyo.

Longhorn To Ship In Fall 2006

Microsoft plans to ship its next version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, in the fall of 2006, but executives acknowledged that it could slip into the following year. At the company's annual Worldwide Partner Conference, one Microsoft executive said the company will provide the first beta of Longhorn aimed at IT professionals this summer, but the "cool new UI" with visualization, organization and search capabilities won't be included in the Longhorn code until beta 2, which is due next year.

Microsoft, Redmond, Wash., has said it will ship the Longhorn client in 2006 and server in 2007. In the interim, Microsoft is preparing to officially launch its next-generation SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 on Nov. 7, and Windows Server 2003 R2 and BizTalk Server 2006 by the end of the year. The developer edition of the Longhorn beta will be available at the company's Professional Developer's Conference in September in Los Angeles.

Microsoft Develops Own RFID Framework

Playing catchup to rivals Sun Microsystems and IBM, Microsoft is developing its own RFID framework that it plans to deliver during the first half of 2006. At Tech Ed 2005 in Orlando recently, Microsoft Server Vice President Paul Flessner said the company's RFID offering will perform event management based on a built-in rules engine. Such an engine will enable the software to "sense" business events and take appropriate action, Flessner said.

More significantly, Microsoft's RFID framework will be encapsulated within enterprise applications, such as Microsoft's Axapta 4.0, due next year. The company also will offer its RFID object model and APIs to device manufacturers and ISVs—allowing them to plug into Microsoft's RFID framework and enabling out-of-the-box inventory tracking on the Windows platform, he said.

Microsoft last year created an RFID partner advisory council (PAC) to assess the needs of its service and software partners. A number of partners in particular vertical industries stand to benefit from Microsoft's RFID solution, one service executive said. "This is something that end users are becoming very interested in, and it could be a good service offering for partners who service manufacturer and retail markets," said Paul Freeman, president of Coast Solutions Group, Irvine, Calif. Ken Winell, CEO of Econium, a Totowa, N.J., subsidiary of Visalign, agreed: "Lots of clients are interested in RFID, especially around the point-of-sale stuff," he said. "We are doing some really cool things with distribution and delivery solutions, so the Microsoft RFID [offering] will complement and extend that."

Trend Micro Bug Cost $8 Million

The April release of buggy anti-virus software by Trend Micro cost the company $8.2 million (903 million yen) and forced it to lower revenue and profit forecasts for the next quarter, the Tokyo-based security firm said Thursday.

In late April, Trend Micro released a faulty virus update file that slowed thousands of PCs worldwide to a crawl by chewing up virtually every processor cycle. The company also said it was striving to put a dollar amount on the gaffe.

That direct $8 million loss that Trend's attributing to the incident isn't the only hit the company's taking, however. According to its revised second quarter forecast, the mix-up will likely pull down net sales by almost 3 percent, and its net income by nearly 17 percent. That latter decrease translates into another 700 million yen, or $6.3 million.The $8.2 million already spent went towards creating and staffing a call center to handle customer queries and complaints.

Attackers Could Eavesdrop On Cisco-Routed VoIP Calls

Flaws in Cisco's Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) software could allow an attacker to bring down the alternative-to-traditional-telephone service, or access the server that initiates and routes Web-based calls, an Atlanta-based security firm said.

According to alerts posted online by Internet Security Systems' (ISS) X-Force research team, Cisco's CallManager sports a pair of bugs that could be "reliably exploited" by hackers. The potential result: at best a denial-of-service style crash, at worst, a situation where the attacker could redirect calls at will or even eavesdrop on conversations.

By sending specially-crafted packets to Cisco CallManager, an attacker could create a heap overflow and crash the system or gain access. ISS said that an exploit wouldn't need any help from a user, pushing the threat into a more dangerous category.

"Like many of the applications that are driving today's businesses, VoIP travels over a variety of networks and the public Internet and is therefore susceptible to the same security perils as other staple network components like e-mail, databases, and servers," said Chris Rouland, ISS' chief technology officer, in a statement.

Cisco's own advisory includes details on patched editions of CallManager that are ready to download and install. Users without a current service contract with Cisco, however, must telephone the San Jose, Ca.-based networking company's support line to request the upgrades.

Apple Updates Tiger Operating System

Apple on Tuesday released the newest version of its Mac OS X operating system, 10.4.2, to fix bugs and offer up dozens of improvements and enhancements to bundled applications. The OS's wireless technology, dubbed AirPort, has been updated and improved, said Apple, as have applications such as Mail, iChat, the Finder, Stickies, and Safari.

The update mechanism, Software Update, has been fixed so it no longer quits unexpectedly after upgrading to Tiger, the nom de plume of 10.4; corrects a problem on some machines that wake from a hibernated state to a black screen; and makes sure background maintenance chores run as scheduled.

Updates for both the workstation and server versions of Mac OS X are available. Users can either let the operating system install the update automatically via Software Update (although Apple cautioned that "you may need to run Software Update more than once to get all available updates"), or by a manual download and install from the Apple Web site.

The last refresh of Mac OS X 10.4 was in mid-May, about three weeks after Tiger debuted to much fanfare.

Sun To Open-Source Web Authentication, Single Sign-On

Sun Microsystems plans to open-source its Web site authentication and single sign-on technology. Eric Leach, director of product management at Sun, said the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company will open-source the technology through the Open Source Web Single Sign-On, or OpenSSO project. That effort includes technology related to authentication, single domain, single sign-on, Web agents and J2EE agents, he said.

The identity management technology will be released under Sun's Common Developer and Distributed License (CDDL) program, under which Sun will help the developer community determine which innovations will continue to be developed, Leach said. Sun also will be responsible for testing the technology, he said.

Sun is the first big identity-management player to open-source a component of its technology, according to Leach. The move also means that Sun is changing the industry's approach to Web security, he added.

"This lets people start focusing on more important capabilities like single sign-on across partners, compliance across distributed partner networks, and looking at things like how to provision and manage identities," Leach said. Sun unveiled the plan at the Burton Group's Catalyst Conference North America, being held this week in San Diego.

Mozilla Releases Second Alpha Edition Of Next Standalone Browser

The Mozilla Foundation has posted the second alpha edition of its next stand-alone browser, for now code named "Deer Park."

This version, Mozilla said late Tuesday, now includes an integrated update system that will make it possible to patch the browser will small-sized upgrade files, rather than forcing users to download and re-install a full version, as is now the case. The update system, however, is disabled for the moment.

Also new to Alpha 2 is a feature dubbed Fastback, which caches previously-visited pages in memory for faster display when clicking the back and forward navigation buttons. Although Fastback has been included in numerous Deer Park builds, this is the first time it's been enabled by default.

Deer Park Alpha 2 also sports improvements to pop-up blocking, better support for Mac OS X, several security fixes, and drag-and-drop reordering of tabs. Alpha 2 can be downloaded in versions for Windows, the Mac, and Linux from the Mozilla Web site

Microsoft Offers Download Workaround For IE Bug

Microsoft on Tuesday posted a temporary workaround to a bug in Internet Explorer that could let an attacker grab control of a PC. A patch to actually fix the problem, however, is not yet available.

The vulnerability, which first surfaced last week in a security advisory, involves the "Javaprxy.dll" file, which is part of the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, and handles ActiveX controls. A hacker could exploit the bug to make IE crash or even insert his own code onto the system.

The workaround, which users can download from Microsoft's Download Center, disables Javaprxy.dll by modifying the Windows registry. The same can be done manually, but most users are unfamiliar with that crucial component of the operating system; an error in the registry can make Windows unbootable.

The affected versions of IE include 5.01 SP3 and SP4, 5.5 SP2, 6.0, and 6.0 SP1 on Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP (including the vaunted security update, XP SP2), and Windows Server 2003 (including that OS's recently-released SP1).

A Microsoft spokesperson said that the download would be placed on Windows Update "as soon as possible," and that the update would be included in a future security bulletin. The next scheduled bulletin roll-out is Tuesday, July 12, but Microsoft hasn't committed to adding this fix to that bunch.
Danish security firm Secunia characterized the gaffe as "Extremely critical," the highest rating in its five-step system. Although there's yet no evidence of active attacks on IE based on the vulnerability, U.S.-based security vendor Symantec reported as early as Saturday that exploit code had gone public.

"Comments within the exploit claim that it has been tested on Microsoft Windows XP SP1 and Microsoft Windows XP SP2 systems," Symantec's DeepSight Threat network reported. "The DeepSight Threat Analyst Team was unable to successfully exploit a Microsoft Windows 2000 test system using this exploit, however, minor modifications to the code may allow a successful attack."
Symantec also said it was monitoring port 28876, the port used by the public exploit to target vulnerable PCs, but that "currently, there is no indication of elevated activity targeting this port."

Microsoft Said IE Have Security Flaw

Microsoft Corp. has confirmed a security hole in Internet Explorer that could allow an attacker to take control of a person's PC.

In the meantime, Microsoft has recommended that IE's Internet and local intranet security zone settings be placed at "high," which means the PC user will be prompted before the machine runs ActiveX controls in these zones.

An attacker could exploit the flaw by creating a malicious web page and luring a person to visit the page. The attacker could take control of a PC by running script code on the local system. The problem affects all supported versions of IE.

Microsoft Steps Up Pressure To Adopt Spam-Fighting System

By the end of the year, Microsoft's Hotmail and MSN services will get more aggressive at rejecting mail sent through companies or service providers that do not register their domain names with the Sender ID system

The system calls for Internet service providers, companies, and other domain name holders to submit lists of their mail servers' unique numeric addresses. On the receiving end, software polls a database to verify that a message was actually processed by one of those servers.

Although only a quarter of e-mail messages now carry the proper Sender ID information, Microsoft believes it needs to begin requiring Sender ID to do a better job of cutting down on junk e-mail, said Craig Spiezle, director of Microsoft's technology care and safety team.

For the past six months, Microsoft's Hotmail and MSN services have been checking Sender ID records as one test in determining whether a message is junk.

On Wednesday, Microsoft began posting a warning for users on top of messages whose numeric addresses don't match those in Sender ID records, meaning the e-mail likely came through an unauthorized mail server and could be junk.

By the end of the year, Microsoft will treat as failures cases where Sender ID records don't exist at all, increasing the likelihood those messages would be considered junk.

Microsoft Rolls Out Windows 2000 Rollup Under Deadline

With just two days to spare, Microsoft on Tuesday posted the final update to Windows 2000, which is scheduled to roll off mainstream support Thursday, June 30. Carrying the unwieldy name of Update Rollup for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, the collection of 51 security-related fixes contains all patches produced for Windows 2000 between the November 2003, release of Windows 2000 SP4 and April 30 of this year, when the rollup's features were locked in place.

Earlier, Microsoft had promised to provide the rollup before June 30, when Windows 2000 slips out of mainstream technical support and heads into what the Redmond, Wash.-based developer calls extended support.

Google Unveils Video Viewer

Google Inc. on Monday launched a video viewer for watching and searching video stored in the company's servers. About two months ago, however, the Mountain View, Calif., company launched a "video uploader," a tool for people to store video on Google servers. The latest tool, called the Google Video Viewer, makes it possible to watch the uploaded video through either the Mozilla Foundation's Firefox or Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer web browsers.

The new tool is designed not to interfere with video plug-ins people may already be using, such as the Windows Media Player, RealNetworks's RealPlayer or Apple Computer's QuickTime, Matthew Vosburgh, video software engineer for Google, said in a posting on the company's website.

The viewer includes a search tool for getting results that point to the spot in the video that matches the query, Vosburgh said. The viewer is only available for Windows computers, but a Mac version is planned.

Google and rivals Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp.'s MSN are heavily focused on video, as multimedia content becomes more attractive to the growing number of consumes switching from narrowband to broadband Internet connections.

Microsoft, the world's largest software company, has been in a race with online search firms Google and Yahoo to become the leading provider of tools to find content on the Internet and present it in meaningful ways. Google and Yahoo both offer similar localized search services.

MSN Local Search gets its online maps from Microsoft's MapPoint Web Service and aerial images from TerraServer-USA, which is one of the world's largest online databases and is operated as a research project by Microsoft.
Microsoft also said its local search offering will eventually incorporate a technology called Virtual Earth that will allow results from multiple searches to be layered atop a single map.

"We remain committed to continuously improving our search service and today's local search beta release is just the beginning," said Christopher Payne, corporate vice president for MSN Search at Microsoft. "With the addition of MSN Virtual Earth we are poised to take local search to the next level."

Microsoft Updates its AntiSpyware Beta

Microsoft Corp. quietly refreshed its Windows AntiSpyware tool on Thursday as it also extended the lifespan of the beta to the end of 2005.

Windows AntiSpyware Beta 1 Build 1.0.613 is the second update since the software debuted in early January. Microsoft's made some bug fixes -- earlier versions sometimes caused Internet connectivity problems after they'd removed some spyware -- and extended the program's expiration date to Dec. 31.

Microsoft plans to include in the next version of Windows features to manage Web content distributed via RSS, an increasingly popular way of reading online news and blogs.

A test version of Longhorn--the desktop operating system due late next year--that Microsoft plans to distribute at its Professional Developers Conference in September will include the ability to subscribe to news feeds, blog entries, and other Web content published via RSS from within the Windows user interface. The feature will require the upcoming version 7 of Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser, due in test form this summer. Longhorn will also be able to store data from RSS feeds in a central place on a PC's hard drive and make it available to apps such as PC calendars. "We're making a really big RSS investment in Longhorn," says Gary Schare, Windows product-management director. "We think RSS will work better than past push technology."
